ROTHKO BLURRED BLOCKS AT ELIE SAAB AW14

A Rothko painting - in blue and green - was the inspiration for the make-up at Elie Saab’s AW14 show. Mr. Saab was crystal clear in his guidelines and, no sooner said then done, Tom Pecheux took his cue from the blues and greens in the painting and picked from the MAC AW14 Eye Palette (available online from next week) two cream eyeshadows - Tortoise and Storm Cloud - and blended them out to diffuse the shades outwards. Everything was about giving the feeling of Rothko blurred blocks and to achieve it, Pecheux used a flat concealer brush, the best to apply and blend a cream formula. To finish the look MAC Fluid Line Gel Liner in Black Ivy was used to encircle the eyes as well as multiple coats of black mascara.
For the record, I love Rothko. His transcendent blurred blocks of various colors possess their own life force. And the blending, it’s magical. If you didn’t know, Rothko began to employ dark blues and greens by the mid-1950s and this shift in colors - previously they were mostly reds and yellows - was representative of a growing darkness within Rothko's personal life.
Luckily nothing in Saab’s show was near to dark!

Una delle opere dell’artista - nei toni dei verdi e dei blu - è stata mostrata a Tom Pecheux come ’spunto’ per il trucco, una direttiva che il make-up artist ha colto al volo. Partendo dalla AW14 Eye Palette di MAC Cosmetics (in vendita da settimana prossima online nello store inglese) Pecheux ha scelto due ombretti dalla texture cremosa - Tortoise e Storm Cloud - e li ha stesi sulla palpebra in uno smoky eye ovattato. Se l’obiettivo era richiamare i blocchi sfumati di Rothko, Pecheux ci è riuscito alla grande e il merito va tutto alla sua scelta dello strumento: il pennello per correttore piatto, che permettere di stendere e sfumare le formule cremose alla perfezione. Per finire il look Pecheux ha sottolineato lo sguardo con il Fluid Line Gel Liner in Black Ivy e con più strati di mascara nero.
Rothko è fra i miei artisti preferiti: la forza che trasmettono i suoi quadri è quasi vitale, emozioni indescrivibili fatte di sfumature e fusioni di colore. Per chi non lo sapesse Rothko ha iniziato ad usare i toni del verde e del blu a metà Anni Cinquanta. Questo cambiamento - prima usava principalmente gialli e rossi - è stato rappresentativo di una crescente depressione, cosa che per fortuna non si è vista neanche lontanamente nello show di Elie Saab.
